Master course ‘The European Budget and Economic Governance’

This module focuses on the European Union’s Economic Governance and the EU Budget.  While economic policy is still made at the national level, in the past decade, the European Union has gained more competencies in regulating the common European market and ensuring policy coordination among the member states.  The module introduces new developments in EU economic governance such as the European Semester and recent legislative reforms such as the 6-Pack and 2-Pack. Furthermore, students develop an in-depth understanding of the EU budgetary process and the role of the European Court of Auditors in ensuring robust financial accountability.

The assignments in the course are based on research conducted by Dr. Paul Stephenson and Dr. Aneta Spendzharova in the framework of the EUFINACCO (Financial Accountability in the European Union) research network. Dr. Paul Stephenson is convener of this network, together with Dr. Hartmut Aden (Berlin School of Economics and Law) and Dr. María-Luisa Sánchez-Barrueco (University of Deusto, Bilbao).
