Great that you found our knowledge map! This public project highlights the places in Maastricht where (scientific) knowledge was produced or shared throughout the centuries – well before the establishment of the university.
Although Maastricht only recently obtained a university, the map shows that the city has been connected with science, scholarship and knowledge transfer for much longer, but also that access to education could never be taken for granted. The first design of the map and preliminary texts were created in April 2025 by Dr. Monika Barget on the occasion of the WO in Actie strike against budget cuts in the Dutch education sector. We are happy to continue collecting sources and stories to improve the map and background information.

If you scan the QR codes in the PDF file, you can read the texts on the spot. We invite visitors not only to take the walk, but also to contribute to the further development of the map.
